Subaru IMPREZA 2.5 WRX

Subaru IMPREZA 2.5 WRX

Subaru Are Back With A More Powerful Impreza WRX. Jonathan Crouch Assesses Their Efforts...

The latest Impreza WRX may carry the new face of Subaru but in reality, its yet another tweak on a familiar theme. A theme, it must be said, thats been extremely popular in this country. But only in performance-orientated guise.

Once upon a time, ordinary Imprezas were offered here, but few people bought them. If you went for this Subaru, it was the performance versions you chose the WRX or the WRX STi. Recognising this, the importers now only offer performance versions of this car, giving the market a choice of 2.0R and 2.

5 WRX Imprezas in the latest range, with the STI and STI spec D WRX derivatives acting as the flagship models. Of the two non-STI models, the WRX will, if history is anything to go by, be the strongest seller. Previously, this car came with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine (a 160PS version of which is now fitted to the entry-level 2.

0R variant). This improved unit largely, but not completely, dispenses with the turbo lag that always plagued 2.0-litre WRX models. However, if you want to completely get rid of the irritating delay between plonking down your right foot and feeling the car surge forward, its the latest 2.

5-litre WRX model youll be needing. Which is the variant we look at here, costing either £20,945 as a saloon or £21,445 as a five-door hatch. The change to 2.5-litre power ensures far more useable power low down in the rev-range, just where you need it for everyday driving.

The downside of the engine change is that CO2 emissions have suffered and with them the cars BIK tax banding (which has jumped from 30% to 35%). Fuel consumption has also slipped, from more than 30mpg to 27.4mpg. Power is fractionally up to 230PS and you can feel the improvement behind the wheel, sixty appearing from rest in 5.

9s on the way to a maximum of 143mph. All 06 Imprezas feature agressive bumpers, a spread-wings mesh grille and hawk-eye headlamps matched by new 3-D cylindrical rear lamps. The gearbox is slicker-shifting too.

"Subaru have listened to customers in making the recent improvements and the Impreza is a better car as a result."

Equipment levels are high, including air-conditioning and a single disc CD player. You also get driver, passenger and side airbags and new HID headlamps with pop-up washers. Plus power steering, air conditioning, remote central locking, a hill holder clutch, spoiler kit and 15" alloy wheels, so the WRX certainly doesnt want for standard equipment. Factor in a Category One remote alarm and immobiliser, sports seats and four-channel anti-lock brakes, and it looks good value. As befits true driving enthusiasts, the engineers at Subaru have spent most effort fine tuning the engine, suspension, bodyshell and steering. As with so many evolutionary models, the latest generation Impreza range emerges as a better car, although perhaps not quite so exciting as the original first generation model.

It certainly feels a more mature proposition. The exterior is distinctive and although the single nostril front grille brings to mind some coke-ravaged Z-list celeb, it combines well with the hawk-eye headlights to give the Impreza a more aggressive personality than ever before. Subaru seems to have jumped onto the clear lensed tail lights bandwagon just as most other manufacturers have jumped off and they dont do a lot to lift the impression of overall quality. Despite its many facelifts and revisions, the Impreza never feels like a thoroughly modern car.

The doors clang shut, the trim feels cheap and hard in almost every area and the seating position is far from ideal. Occupant safety has also been boosted in recent times with the fitment of anti-raindrop door mirrors which stay cleaner longer, thus enhancing visibility. The Impreza also takes a cue from the Forester, featuring active front head-restraints which reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. The brake pedal is energy-absorbing, being designed to snap away under severe impact, protecting the drivers lower limbs.

In the rear seat are two ISOFIX-compatible child seat mountings. Subaru has had to think long and hard about the positioning of the Impreza 2.5 WRX, and appears to have pitched for the position of best rally replica around. In going head to head with cheaper versions of Mitsubishis Evo, the WRX model has a tough task on its hands, but many will be seduced by the more characterful engine, the more evocative rally heritage of Burns and McRae and, to these eyes at least, the more menacing styling.

Subaru have listened to customers in making the recent improvements and the Impreza is a better car as a result.

Subaru FORESTER 2.0 Xirs

Subaru FORESTER 2.0 Xirs

Looking For A Compact 4x4 With More Of That Elusive X-Factor? Subaru May Have Something To Interest You In The Forester 2.0 X. By Andy Enright

Compact 4x4s have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years with several manufacturers now building some respectable metal. Trouble is, theres still something of a stigma attached to them. Cynics sneer at their lifestyle pretensions, denigrating them as Barbie Trucks or Salon Chariots. Subaru have deliberately steered clear of this sort of image with their Forester, a car that ploughs a resolutely rugged furrow.

The X model represents an unpretentious entry level to the Forester range.

Its certainly an interesting concept, blending the practicality of an estate with the all-wheel drive utility of a true off-roader. Of course, the Forester is an exercise in compromise but Subaru have managed this balance better than most. The Forester X is a model which doesnt get the column inches of its more powerful turbocharged XT siblings, but it nevertheless merits consideration. With better economy and a far lower asking price, the X model is a compelling value proposition.

Two 2.0-litre variants are available, the basic X, priced at £17,620 or the leather-trimmed XE which retails at £20,520. Equipment levels are fairly generous, the standard car being fitted with twin airbags, headlamp washers, remote central locking, heated mirrors, electric windows all round and a CD-based stereo. Roof rails, metallic paint, a height adjustable drivers seat and climate controlled air conditioning are also part of the Forester X package.

Should you want a little extra, the XE adds cruise control and heated front seats, plus that leather trim. Theres a fresh look to the latest version of this car. There are revisions to the front wings, bonnet, bumper, grille and headlamps, giving what Subaru sees as far greater road-presence and visual dynamics. Larger wheels plus design changes at the rear are all aimed at making this Forester look taller, more imposing and closer to a conventional SUV.

"The Forester X represents the most direct link to the sort of cars that established Subaru"

Under the bonnet, the latest four-cam naturally-aspirated 2.0 litre boxer engine is the most powerful in its class, improving on the previous 2.0-litre variants top speed by 10 mph to 122 mph and slashing the 0-60 mph time from 11.1 seconds to 9.

4 seconds. This substantially beats all 2.0 litre petrol SUV rivals such as the Nissan X-Trail, Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4, yet the Forester offers similar fuel economy and exhaust emissions with, for example, 37.7 mpg on the Extra Urban Cycle.

One thing that certainly needed improvement on this car was the rather plasticky interior. Some effort has been made in this regard and, at the same time, the designers have tried to incorporate an extra range of useful touches. For example, a multi-function centre console between the front seats now offers a multitude of uses. These include an armrest which slides forward, hinges vertical and flips backwards creating a small table.

It also slides far enough rearwards to provide the rear-seat passengers with two cup-holders. The console also has a console pocket able to hold four CDs, while a 12-volt power outlets allows driver and passengers to recharge their mobile phones. The loadbay now has a clever luggage-restraining system. This includes four hooks for holding a net and bar hangers to allow karabiners and hooks to be attached to form a hammock-type net.

All of these restraining devices are fitted below the conventional load-cover, enhancing security. In order to improve rear-seat comfort, the seat base has been extended by 50 mm, while front seat fore and aft adjustment is now via an easy to access full-width towel bar. Finally, in keeping with its active lifestyle role, the Foresters seats and doors feature water-repellent material. Despite wanting to make the latest Forester look like more of a serious off roader, Subaru didnt want it to handle like one.

Hence a series of dynamic improvements aimed at producing sharper driving responses and less of a rolly polly ride. Strengthened suspension mounts and revised spring and damper settings better control wheel movement best appreciated when undertaking sudden lane-change movements. As before, the Foresters front and rear struts are fitted with rebound springs which reduce pitch and better control body roll. The coil springs and damper valves have been fine-tuned, geometry tweaked and suspension bushing revised to give a linear response to the slightest of steering movements.

As ever, self-levelling rear suspension is standard and brings with it the advantage that the ground clearance for covering unmade tracks and rough terrain remains constant even when the car is fully laden with passengers and luggage. Moreover, thanks to larger 16 ins wheels with 215/60 tyres, this 2.0-litre model has more ground clearance, 205mm to be exact. The Forester X represents the most direct link to the sort of cars that established Subaru.

No nonsense, unpretentious all wheel drive estates that were just as happy fording a stream or battling up a boggy trail as cruising in the outside lane of the M1 have always been the companys bread and butter. Many other small 4x4s can also claim to offer the best of both worlds but ask yourself this question. Where do they look most at home? If the answer is caked with mud on a Welsh hillside, the chances are youre a Forester customer. If its laden with shopping bags on the single yellows outside Asda, then Subaru may not be able to help you.

Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX Type-UK

Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX Type-UK

Especially For Us Brits, Subaru Have Launched An Added Value Impreza Model. Its The Type-UK And Unsurprisingly, Its Extremely Rapid. Steve Walker Reports

There have been a multitude of different high-performance Subaru Impreza editions over the years. Bearing names like WRX, WR1, P1, STi, Type-UK or some baffling combination thereof, it takes a true Scooby aficionado to understand exactly what each one offers. One thing that they definitely all offer, is indecent pace and the WRX Type-UK version of the current 2.5-litre Impreza is no exception.

What it isnt, is any quicker than the standard 2.5-litre WRX Impreza but that shouldnt prove a major deterrent and there are other factors to recommend the Type-UK.

Just for a change, Subaru saw fit to launch an Impreza variant that didnt push the cars already bulging performance envelope any further with power upgrades or handling tweaks. The Impreza WRX Type-UK is mechanically identical to the WRX but it will still tempt buyers with its sparkling value proposition. At no extra cost over the WRX, the Type-UK delivers an anti-theft tracking system, touch screen satellite navigation and a Bluetooth hands-free phone kit. The rally-replica Impreza has never been known for its high-tech gadgetry but this model makes steps toward changing that.

If the only thing keeping your name off the registration document of a new Subaru Impreza WRX is the cost of running such a high performance car, the WRX Type-UK may have the answer. This model is available with free servicing for the first five years or 50,000 miles which has the potential to save you over £1,000. In addition, the vehicle also comes with an extended warranty taking that cover up to five years or 50,000 miles too. The deal is only available for a limited period, so the message is to act now and avoid disappointment.

The WRX Type-UK edition is available for the same price as the standard WRX and you dont need to be a brain surgeon to work out which one most buyers will be going for. Like the WRX, the Type UK is priced from £20,945 and theres a higher-spec SL version costing £22,445. The Imprezas change to 2.5-litre power ensures far more useable grunt low down in the rev-range on the current models, just where you need it for everyday driving.

The downside of the engine change is that CO2 emissions have suffered and with them the cars BIK tax banding. Fuel consumption has also slipped, from more than 30mpg to 27.4mpg. Although, if you drive the Impreza as its manufacturer intended, you wont approach those figures anyway.

"Just remember the Type-UK deal is for a limited period, it wouldnt do to miss out"

Power is fractionally up to 230PS and you can feel the improvement behind the wheel, sixty appearing from rest in 5.9s on the way to a maximum of 143mph. All Imprezas feature aggressive bumpers, a spread-wings mesh grille and hawk-eye headlamps matched by new 3-D cylindrical rear lamps. The gearbox is slicker-shifting too.

Toyota Celebrates Its 50th Year Anniversary With Camry Hybrid

Toyota Celebrates Its 50th Year Anniversary With Camry Hybrid

Toyota Camry Hybrid

It may sound to you that this new hybrid from Toyota is their own way of celebrating 50 years of selling hybrids. But no, the Japanese auto brand is revealing its plan to produce the Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition to commemorate its 50 years of giving good and quality cars to the United States auto market.

What do this new Camry get? Well, to celebrate its 50 years in the US car business, Toyota gave the new car a bleached white Blizzard Pearl paint job on its exterior body parts. Aside from that, the new Camry also gets the standard lot of equipment plus other additional ones like a moonroof and heated power side mirrors. Inside the white car are a voice-actived nav unit, heated front seats and a bisque-colored leather trim. Plus, a brushed stainless steel dash applique, illuminated front door sills and carpeted floor mats are all coming bedecked with the "50th Anniversary Edition" logo.

Toyota also gave the new car unique 16-inch wheels which come finished in graphite. Of course, the car won’t be running without its "50th Anniversary Edition" badges.

The Japanese auto maker will be producing 3,000 units of the Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition which comes in a base MSRP of $31,680 each. That's fair compared to a standard Camry Hybrid that starts at $26,200.

In my opinion, it would be appropriate for Toyota to release a Tundra 50th Anniversary Edition since the car is exclusively made for the North American market.

Asian Automakers Tops Greenest Vehicles List

Whoa! What happened to our domestic automakers?

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has evaluated and chosen the greenest cars for model year 2007 with the release of their Green Book Online, a guide for consumers in buying environmental friendly cars and trucks. Here is the frustrating part: all the 12 green vehicle models included in the list are built by Asian automakers. Right. You won’t be seeing any Ford, Chrysler, or GM branded vehicles in the top 12 list.

Moving all the way to the top spot is the natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX, making it as the USA’s greenest vehicle. Following the Civic GX is the undisputed Toyota Prius hybrid, which was dubbed as America’s most favorite hybrid vehicle and the best seller for 2006. Other Asian automakers in the list included Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia.

2008 Volkswagen R32

2008 Volkswagen R32

  • Competes with: Honda Civic Si, Subaru Impreza WRX, Volkswagen GTI
  • Looks like: A Rabbit two-door with a few surprises
  • Drivetrain: 250-hp, 3.2-liter six-cylinder with DSG automated-manual six-speed transmission; all-wheel drive.
  • Hits dealerships: Orders being taken now at 5000R32.com

After the success of its limited-production 2004 R32, Volkswagen is bringing out a new version based on the redesigned Rabbit/GTI. What distinguishes the R32 from the GTI is its 3.2-liter six-cylinder and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Unlike the GTI, the R32 will be produced only as a two-door.

Exterior
Also distinguishing the R32 from the GTI are its wider, lower stance, centered dual tailpipes, and yet another interpretation of the new plunging VW grille that incorporates brushed aluminum. Side skirts further the ground-hugging look. A rear roof spoiler and a moonroof are standard.

Through the 18-inch multispoke wheels can be seen blue brake calipers and extra large discs. The all-wheel drive might attract foul-weather buyers, but the R32 comes with summer performance tires that aren't the best choice for snow and ice.

The R32 will be offered in blue, gray, red and white.

Interior
The interior has R logos on its heated leather sport seats and on the stainless steel pedals. The austere but high-quality interior has metallic trim on the dashboard and steering wheel, which also bears a number telling you which of the 5,000 R32s that are being produced you bought.

Under the Hood
The GTI comes only with an excellent 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The R32's 3.2-liter generates 250 hp and more than 230 pounds-feet of torque. The 3.2-liter, which is the source of the 32 in the model name, is a staggered inline-six — or what VW has traditionally called a VR6. (It's not a true V-6 because it has one head; the odd-numbered cylinders are offset by 15 degrees.) VW says the R32 sprints to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

The 2004 R32 was fun to drive, but a bit front-heavy. Now, in place of the Quattro AWD system — which split the torque 50/50 between the front and rear wheels — is a 4Matic system that apportions up to 75 percent of the torque to the rear wheels for better balance and handling.

The well-regarded Direct Shift Gearbox, an automated six-speed manual, is standard. The paddle-shifting crowd should be happy, but there's no plan for a true manual transmission.

Safety
Safety features include antilock brakes with brake assist, an electronic stability system and six airbags, including side curtains and side torso airbags for the front seats.

2008 Scion tC Gets Standard iPod Integration, New Grille

2008 Scion tC Gets Standard iPod Integration, New Grille

Tc1

The tC coupe doesn’t get the radical redesign that the 2008 xB did, but it does get a few touches to keep the 2008 model fresh when it arrives this summer. A new black grille with varying sizes of circles, like those on the new xB and xD, has been added, along with new headlight and taillight treatments that resemble the tC’s new family members.

The inside remains pretty much the same, with iPod integration now a standard feature. This allows iPod owners complete control of their tunes via stereo and steering-wheel controls, and the stereo head unit displays track names and artist information. The seat fabric has been upgraded, and there are more silver-accented touches on the doors and center stack.

Surprisingly, two popular colors — Azure Pearl and Black Cherry Mica — have been replaced in 2008 by Crimson Mica and Wave Line Pearl.

Audi A5 Coupe World Debut

Audi A5 Coupe World Debut

A5500

Automotive journalists knew this all-new two-door coupe was coming from Audi, but it will probably come as a complete surprise to most car shoppers. The A5 — debuting at the Geneva Motor Show — is based on an all-new car platform that will serve as the basis for the next A4 sedan. The A5’s size is similar to the current A4, and it will compete with the BMW 3 Series coupe.

The design follows much of what we’ve seen from Audi lately, with its big-mouth-bass grille, but the curvy line down the side and two-door body style is unique to the A5. Audi decided against calling the new model an A4 coupe, which may confuse some shoppers.

Powering the A5 in Europe will be two gasoline engines, a 265-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 and a 170-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbo. The V-6 sees a 10-hp increase over the power plant in the current A4, while the four-cylinder is actually a smaller engine than what’s in the current base A4. Audi has confirmed that the U.S. will only get the larger V-6, first with a manual transmission, then later with an automatic. There are also two diesel power plants in Europe, but they’re not going to be brought to the U.S. The A5 we’ll get here goes on sale in November.

We’re not sure how well the A5 will be received in the states, but the A4 has held up well and this new platform should be a significant improvement. Either way, it gives us a glimpse of the future of Audi’s most popular model. We have a full photo gallery below.

Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler is the quintessential Jeep. Soft-top, soft-doors, roll-bar, short wheelbase, rough ride and supremely capable offroad. It's always been a light-weight, small SUV high on fun and low on creature comforts.

With the 2007 model year, Jeep ushers in the latest in a long line of short wheelbase Jeeps, who's spiritual & actual start was in the 1940s. While similar only in concept, the latest Wrangler has the same sense of rugged go-anywhere ability that the original MB embodied.

Jeep Wrangler YJ

With a hose-out interior, optional hard-top and rugged components designed to take a pounding, current Jeep Wrangler owners will feel right at home when the 2007 Wrangler roll onto dealer lots.

The Wrangler name truly came into it's own when the Jeep YJ debuted. The square-headlight Jeep was the successor to the CJ-7 model and brought a range of improvements to the line. The next Jeep Wrangler was the TJ model, which did away with leaf springs in favor of coils at all four corners. This made for a dramatic improvement in on-road ride quality, while preserving the Wrangler's ability to travel pretty much anywhere it was pointed offroad. The Wrangler TJ also saw Jeep return to round headlights.

Throughout it's life, the Wrangler has played host to numerous engines:

  • 4.0L EFI straight-six
  • 2.5L 4-cyl
  • 4.2L straight-six
  • 3.8L V6 (2007)
Lifted Jeep Wrangler TJ

While the typical Wrangler was short on interior space, Jeep introduced the Wrangler Unlimited with an extra 15" overall in length added to the typical TJ version. With an extra 10" behind the driver & passenger seats and 5" behind the rear seats, the Wrangler Unlimited (TJ-L) brought new levels of on-road ride quality to the Wrangler - not to mention vastly increasing the utility of this icon.

Jeep Wranglers have always been one of the last models upgraded - partly due to inherent design limitations, and partly due to Jeep's desire to NOT mess with a profitable model.

This meant that for years, if you wanted an automatic transmission, it was a 3-speed with no overdrive. Today, though, you have a choice of a 6-speed manual or 4-speed auto with overdrive.

Transfer cases have typically been of one variety - part time.

Jeep Wrangler - the future

With the introduction of the Rubicon model into the Wrangler line-up, Jeep reaffirmed it's commitment to die-hard Jeep fans. This model came equipped with lower gearing in it's transfer-case, lower gearing in the axles and air-operated lockers for both the front and rear axles. Riding on beefy 5-spoke, 16" allow wheels, and equipped with 31" Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires from the factory, this Jeep Wrangler was ready to turn right immediately and hit the dirt.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The next move forward came when Jeep applied this formula to the Unlimited version, creating the supremely capable Rubicon Unlimited. With it's lengthened wheelbase and upgraded capabilities, the Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited is the best performing off-the-shelf offroader Jeep has ever produced.

Soldiering on under the hood, the 4.0L straight six motor has proven time and again to be bulletproof reliable. It also delivers excellent low-speed torque. 2006 will mark the end of the 4.0L in the Wrangler, as it's replaced with a 3.8L V6 engine offering more power and more torque.

2007 also marks the latest iteration of the venerable Wrangler. With it's rugged good looks intact, it's hose-out interior still in place and it's go-anywhere ability virtually guaranteed based on the specs, it's going to be another winner. Jeep is staying true to it's spiritual roots with this Wrangler model, making it a serious performer offroad, right off the showroom floor. ...and they're keeping the live-axle up front!

2006 Toyota Tacoma

2006 Toyota Tacoma

toyota tacoma

In your capable hands, the 2006 Tacoma is ready to make an impression on any surface. An available 236-hp V6 can be matched to a rugged 6-speed manual transmission. Throw yourself inside and you’ll find the roomiest Tacoma we’ve ever made, sitting on top of the strongest chassis we’ve ever forged. And if that wasn’t enough, there are 18 different Tacomas - from the corner-carving X-Runner to the Double Cab Long Bed. The earth is your canvas, the wilderness your sketchbook.

Toyota introduced an all-new Tacoma pickup truck line for 2005 and for 2006 adds safety features to this popular model. All Tacoma models for 2006 gain a Tire Pressure Monitor System, which is designed to detect a significant loss of pressure in any tire and alert the driver by a warning light in the instrument panel. Seriously low tire air pressure can potentially lead to a hazardous handling condition.

In addition, Tacoma models equipped with the bench front seat gain the advanced dual-stage airbag system with an occupant classification system (OCS), which was already standard on bucket seat models. A new service reminder light has been added to all Tacoma models.

The Tacoma line features a wide selection of models that are larger, more maneuverable, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient than the compact trucks they replaced. Leading the Tacoma line in performance and style is the exciting X-Runner model that blends concept-truck design with sports car performance from a 236-horsepower V6 engine and a specially tuned chassis.

"The larger Tacoma series was the first step in expanding our presence in the North American light truck arena," said Jim Lentz, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "In terms of size, power, safety and capability, the new-generation Tacoma was designed to meet the changing demands of the pickup truck market."

Larger than its predecessor in almost every metric of comparison, the new-generation Tacoma offers an extensive variety of body-and-bed configurations with substantially more passenger room, cargo volume and towing capacity than before.

Eighteen model configurations make up the 2006 Tacoma line, based on three cab types: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab. The Tacoma Regular Cab and Access Cab models feature a 73.5-inch-long bed. The Double Cab is available with a choice of a 60.3-inch bed and the 73.5-inch bed.

The new-generation Tacoma is equipped with a full array of safety technology. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on all models, and the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is available for all models except X-Runner.

All Tacoma models for 2006 are equipped with the advanced dual-stage airbag system with an occupant classification system (OCS). A front passenger cutoff switch is standard on all Regular and Access Cab models. Double Cab models in addition offer optional side curtain and front seat side airbags. All seating positions on every Tacoma model are equipped with three-point seatbelts.

Larger, Yet More Maneuverable

The new-generation Tacoma moves well beyond the compact-truck dimensions of the previous model. Regular Cab 4x2 models are built on a 109.4-inch wheelbase (an increase of 5.9-inches); PreRunner and 4x4 Regular Cab Tacomas sit on a 110-inch wheelbase; 4x2 Access Cab models ride on a 127.2-inch wheelbase (an increase of 5.3-inches); Access Cab PreRunner and 4x4 wheelbase is 127.8-inches.

The Double Cab with the standard five-foot bed shares the 127.8-inch wheelbase, and the Double Cab long-bed models ride on a 140.9-inch wheelbase. Front and rear track have been widened by nearly four inches compared to the previous-generation Tacoma, yielding more than four inches of additional shoulder and hip room.

The Tacoma Access Cab models feature dual rear access doors instead of one as on the previous-generation model. Rear doors on Double Cab models are more than three inches longer than before and open to 80 degrees to give passengers easier access.

Even with its large dimensions and passenger room, the Tacoma offers a stronger, stiffer chassis and improved maneuverability. Suspension and steering tuning improve off-road performance and on-road ride and handling.

Powerful Engines for Hard Work – and Play

The 2006 Tacoma line features two engines: a 2.7-liter VVT-i DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft. of torque and a 4.0-liter VVT-i DOHC V6 that produces 236 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. of torque. Both engines feature an Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i) that helps improve performance and fuel economy.

Two transmissions are offered with the V6 engine, a six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic. The four-cylinder models offer a choice between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.

Tacoma features an integrated hitch and bumper design. Properly equipped, the V6-powered Tacoma models can tow up to 6,500 pounds, a 30-percent increase over the 5,000-lb towing capacity of the previous generation V6 models.

X-Runner: Muscletruck Meets Sports Car

A true performance truck factory-developed as a separate-and-dedicated model, the X-Runner showcases the Tacoma line’s 236-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine in a specially lowered and tuned chassis. The X-Runner name is derived from its exclusive "X-braced" reinforced frame that provides enhanced torsional rigidity.

The X-Runner’s Access Cab design incorporates full-vehicle-surround ground effects, a hood scoop and integrated fog lamps. It is offered in just three colors – Radiant Red, Black Sand and Speedway Blue – on its color-keyed monochromatic exterior.

The X-Runner suspension is lowered one inch versus the standard Tacoma and rolls on 255/45R18 Bridgestone Potenza performance tires wrapped around 18-inch alloy wheels. The exclusive X-Runner suspension incorporates firmer and shorter springs, specially tuned Bilstein gas shock absorbers positioned outboard of the frame rails for increased stability, rear stabilizer bar with firmer bushings and specially tuned steering response.

Available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, X-Runner is also equipped with a limited-slip rear differential. The X-Runner can accelerate from zero-to-60 MPH in less than seven seconds. As impressive as its acceleration, Tacoma X-Runner can achieve lateral acceleration in excess of 0.9-g, giving it outstanding road-holding ability.

Head-Turning Style Outside, Expanded Utility Inside

With its big, bold headlights and grille, Tacoma exudes a strong, rugged appearance. From the outside, flush rear surface glass and flush surface structures between the bumper sides and body give Tacoma a sophisticated and higher-quality appearance. PreRunner and 4x4 models are distinguished by bold overfenders.

The composite inner bed is made from a sheet-molded compound (SMC) deck and walls that are 10 percent lighter than steel, yet tougher and more durable. The bed deck features two-tier loading and integrated deck rail utility that includes four standard adjustable tie-down cleats. The rails are compatible with Genuine Toyota Accessories, including cargo bed cross bars, a fork-mount bike rack, and diamond-plate storage boxes. An available 115V/400W powerpoint further extends the bed’s utility. Double Cab models offer a first-in-class roof rack system with crossbars that deploy from the roof rails.

Interior storage has been maximized in Access Cab models by means of tumble-flat rear seats with underseat storage and, on Double Cab models, additional storage behind the rear seatback. On all models with front bucket seats (except the sport seats), the front passenger seat folds flat and features a tray table.

Comfortable, But Still Rugged

While retaining a rugged overall look and feel, the interior offers admirable comfort with high-grade fabric and generous standard equipment. Sound absorption material in the headliner and behind the rear seats and better-insulating carpeting help to provide a quiet cabin. Exterior aerodynamic details help reduce wind noise.

A three-pod instrument gauge panel lends a sporty look in all models. The center console (standard on Access Cab and Double Cab models; available on Regular Cab) flows up into the instrument panel for a unified appearance. The console includes three integrated cupholders, two that can accommodate extra-large containers. All models provide dual bottle holders in driver’s- and passenger’s-side doors.

Audio controls are mounted high for easy access. Higher-grade models feature fabric-covered sun visors and an overhead console with map lights and compartments for sunglasses and a garage door opener.

Outstanding Value, Simplified Ordering

All Tacoma models offer compelling value. The well-equipped 4x2 Regular Cab model includes as standard equipment anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), a full-size spare tire, AM/FM CD 4-speaker sound system, tachometer, digital clock, two instrument panel powerpoints with lighter, a coolant temperature gauge, fuel warning light, dome lamp and rear mudguards.

The Access Cab and Double Cab models add more standard features, including bucket seats, a center console, and, in Double Cab models, upgraded seat fabric and power windows, mirrors and door locks.

All option combinations are built on five packages. An Enhancement Package for the 4x2 Regular Cab adds air conditioning and styled steel wheels. The Convenience Package adds cruise control, remote keyless entry, and power windows, door locks and mirrors.

The SR5 Package bundles styling and comfort features, including color-keyed overfenders and front bumper, chrome grille surround and chrome rear bumper, center console (in models where it is not standard), intermittent wipers and upgraded interior features and trim. In Access Cab and Double Cab models, the SR5 package also adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter.

Access and Double Cab models offer upgraded audio systems, including an AM/FM radio with a CD player, six-disc changer and six speakers. Double Cab models also offer a JBL premium audio system with seven speakers, including an amplified subwoofer. Both audio upgrades feature steering wheel audio controls.

High Performance Options and Accessories

The high-performance truck market is a growing segment dominated by young male enthusiasts that make significant investments in the modification and customization of their trucks. Toyota is committed to reaching this unique market and offers a variety of performance parts and option packages.

The TRD Off-Road Package offers a carefully tuned balance of off-road performance and on-road handling. Chassis modifications include a locking rear differential, progressive-rate front springs, specially tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, a 28-mm front stabilizer bar and 265/70R16 BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires on 16-inch alloy wheels. Fog lamps and TRD graphics top off the package for a tough, sporty appearance.

The TRD Sport Package is road-focused and features its own specific suspension tuning, a limited-slip rear differential and lower-profile 265/65R17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. This package also gives Tacoma a sporty street look with fog lamps, a hood scoop, TRD graphics and a color-keyed rear bumper, mirrors, grille surround and door handles. Double Cabs with the long-bed and the TRD Sport Package also include an electrochromic auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Both TRD option packages include a 400W/115V powerpoint in the bed, sport seats with adjustable lumbar support and unique fabric, plus an overhead console with a compass and outside temperature display.

The available dealer-installed high-performance Big Brake system was developed specifically for this model by Toyota Technical Center and TRD engineers. The goal was to develop a system for hardcore enthusiasts that would provide effective braking performance under sustained heavy use.

The Big Brake system was tested extensively by Toyota engineers both on the ride and handling course and the high-speed oval at the Toyota Arizona Proving Ground. The system features huge 13 x 1.25-inch semi-floating vented rotors with directional internal fins; forged aluminum four-piston fixed calipers; larger pads with high coefficient-of-friction material, and braided steel lines. The system dramatically improves pedal feel and substantially reduces brake fade from repeated high-speed stops.

New Level of Dynamic Control

In all 2006 Tacoma models, the standard four-wheel ABS is augmented by EBD and BA. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel for greater control under braking, especially when cornering. The Brake Assist system is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not pressed firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power until pedal pressure is released.

Tacoma offers some of the most sophisticated dynamic control technology in the Toyota inventory and in the compact pickup truck category. The optional VSC and TRAC (Traction Control) systems give Tacoma models traction on or off-road by helping to keep the vehicle going on its intended course. The system detects front-wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempts to control either condition with throttle intervention and/or by braking individual wheels.

Some VSC and TRAC systems also include Automatic Limited-slip Differential (A-LSD), which uses brake intervention in place of a mechanical-type LSD unit to help reduce tire slippage at the rear wheels. (The TRD Off-Road Package uses a locking rear differential, and the TRD Sport Package is equipped with a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.)

On automatic transmission models, the VSC and TRAC option also includes Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). When the option is ordered along with the TRD Off-Road Package on 4x4 V6 automatic models, it also includes the Downhill Assist Control (DAC) system. By independently controlling the brakes at each of the wheels as needed, the HAC system helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward or slipping sideways during transition from a stopped position to climbing an upgrade.

The DAC system uses engine braking to regulate downhill speed and independently control the brakes at each of the four wheels to improve directional stability. This feature also works in reverse and is automatically de-activated if the driver depresses the brake or accelerator pedals, presses the DAC button, or shifts into neutral.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee went into production in 1993 and continues to be produced today.

The Grand Cherokee was the range-topping model for Jeep until the Commander debuted in 2006. And even now, with the SRT-8 model, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is still one of the most sought after Jeeps every produced.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Built on a unibody chassis, the Grand Cherokee has always been Jeep's expression of luxury in a fully offroad capable package.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee managed the remarkable feat of handling the demands of highway driving as well as it handled offroad terrain. With solid axles and coil springs all around, the Grand Cherokee offered comfort and ability straight from the factory.

Not everyoone felt at ease taking their $40,000 + Grand offroad, but those who did were happy to learn the capablilities of their rigs easily lived up to Jeep's legendary standards.

Since 1993, the Grand Cherokee has played host to numerous engines:

  • 4.0L EFI straight-six
  • 5.9L V8
  • 5.2L V8
  • 4.7L MPFI V8
  • 5.7L Hemi V8
5.7 Hemi engine

The Grand Cherokee came from the factory with a number of transfer-cases from part-time units, to full-time AWD units with and without low-range.

To say the Grand Cherokee is capable offroad is understating the fact. 99% of GC owners will never know just how capable their SUVs are, but they rest easy knowing they COULD tackle anything put in front of them and like almost every Jeep, the Grand Cherokee has been tested over the Rubicon trail and earned the trail rated badges that adorn it's fenders.

Though the majority of Grands purchased were never ordered with them, Jeep offered the usual array of tow-points, skid plates and traction-enhancing options like limited slip differentials.

Checking the right boxes on the order sheet could get you a leather-trimmed boulevard cruiser that could tackle a trail rated 7+ without a problem.

Jeep Grand Cherokee - Poser or performer?

Even though it shared part of it's name with the Cherokee, the Grand was a unique design. It took some time, but the aftermarket now offers pretty much anything you need to toughen up your Grand and make it a trail-killer.

Given their coil spring design, they are more expensive to lift than other Jeeps, but they retain their excellent ride characteristics when lifted and offer truly impressive amounts of flex when needed.

Grand Cherokee off road

The Grand has never been a big SUV, and space inside is cozy. there's lots of room with the rear seats folded, though, so carrying home bulky items it can handle with ease.

With the introduction of the 4.7L V8 engine, Jeep's Grand Cherokee took a major step forward in the power department. This engine offers enough power to make the Grand a seriously quick rig. It also offers better economy than the old 5.2L engine it replaced, though it does require premium fuel in the H.O. version.

One model year saw Jeep practically invent the "Power-SUV" category. In 1998, Jeep shocked everyone by shoe-horning the 360ci (5.9L) V8 into the Grand. Equipped with uprated tires and a revised suspension, this was one powerful Jeep. Today, Jeep continues to lead this category with the SRT-8. The 5.9 was produced in limited numbers, but unlike the SRT-8, which is a street-only Grand Cherokee, the 5.9 Grand from 1998 could perform very well offroad.
